Malaysia Secures Southeast Asia’s Largest Floating Solar Project – A Landmark for Regional Solar Growth
Date:2026-01-17
Abu Dhabi‑based renewable energy leader Masdar has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Malaysia’s national utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for a 200 MW floating solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at Chereh Dam in Pahang State — set to become Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar installation.
Key Highlights:
• Developed by a consortium led by Masdar with Citaglobal & Tiza Global
• Site will span roughly 950 acres of reservoir surface
• Designed for over 300 MWp DC capacity, enough to power 100,000+ homes
• Project part of Malaysia’s renewable roadmap to increase clean energy to 35 % of the national mix by 2030
• Successfully awarded under Malaysia’s Large Scale Solar (LSS 5+) programme with competitive tariff results
Floating solar maximizes water surfaces, offers natural cooling, reduces evaporation, and showcases how Southeast Asia is innovating beyond traditional ground‑mounted PV to accelerate its energy transition.
Why It Matters:
This project reflects the growing momentum of utility‑scale solar in Southeast Asia and highlights the region’s evolving investment landscape in renewable energy. It also signals expanding opportunities for developers, investors, and technology partners interested in next‑generation solar deployments.
In the context of ASEAN’s renewable ecosystem, platforms like ASEAN Wind & Solar Energy Expo 2026 (AWE) — taking place March 25–27, 2026, at IMPACT Exhibition Centre, Bangkok, Thailand — offer industry players the chance to connect with stakeholders, gain insights on market trends, and explore strategic collaborations across both wind and solar sectors.
